Trip to Buffalo and Canada

What will probably be our longest trip of the year took place in mid-July. We went to attend a convention of the Family Motor Coach Association in Buffalo, New York. I had to take photos and note so I could write a magazine article and also gave a seminar. From there we spent one night and two days in Niagara Falls, Ontario where we celebrated Nancy's birthday. After that, we drove through Toronto to the Lake Simcoe area to meet with some bus people.

Nancy, Panjee and Tricia were able to come along and this was their first time to go into Canada. Nancy and Panjee now have permanent resident cards so they can now cross over the international border. Tricia is a U.S. citizen and has her own passport.

We left home on a Wednesday morning headed for Buffalo, New York. My original plan was to drive through Cleveland and Erie but soon after leaving home I remembered that we now had permanent resident cards for the girls and it was shorter to take a short cut through Canada. Hence, we drove through Detroit and entered Canada at Windsor. We spent the night in Woodstock, Ontario. On Thursday we crossed back over to the United States at Buffalo, New York and checked into the Comfort Inn in Hamburg, New York.

Tricia shows off her new swimming outfit which was a gift from Tito Jong in Florida. It came in handy because the hotel had an indoor swimming pool.

Here we are getting ready to leave our hotel on Saturday night to attend the dinner given by Prevost Car , a bus builder, in the Convention Center in downtown Buffalo. The people from the Family Motor Coach Association provided badges for Nancy, Panjee and Tricia. 02.jpg
One of the delights on Saturday evening was that Prevost had rented a new carousel and had it moved to the second floor of the Convention Center for the enjoyment of their guests. Tricia wanted to keep riding and Panjee came along too. Here, Tricia waves to her friends from the carousel. 03.jpg
Monday found us at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Since there was a light rain, we decided to make our first stop at the new Butterfly Conservatory located just north of Niagara Falls. Nancy took this photo of Tricia keeping an eye on the butterfly which landed on my shoulder. She has difficulty with a big word like "butterfly" so she calls them "BOO-flies." 04.jpg
Nancy, Panjee and Tricia pose on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. In the background is the American Falls, the little Bridal Veil Falls, and the city is Buffalo, New York. Two years earlier Nancy and Panjee were on the other side in Buffalo but could not cross over into Canada at that time.

Tricia, as always, enjoyed the traveling. She even learned to say "waterfall."

I took Nancy, Panjee and Tricia down into the tunnels under the falls. They make you wear these yellow rain coats because it can get wet down there.

In this photo we are actually standing in a tunnel under the brink of the Horseshoe or Canadian falls. Just behind the girls is a portal where you can see the water rushing down. It is interesting that you can almost never see through the falls from either the outside in or the portal out because the vast amount of water coming over the falls. More water comes over Niagara Falls than any other waterfall in the world.

My back was to the Canadian or Horseshoe Falls when I took this photo of Nancy, Panjee and Tricia. In the background is the Skylon Tower where we ate dinner to celebrate Nancy's birthday. The restaurant revolves once each hour, giving you a beautiful view of the falls and the cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario and Buffalo, New York while you dine. The food is very good.

While we were at Niagara Falls, and in consideration of Nancy's birthday, we took a room on the 22nd floor of the Hilton Hotel overlooking the falls. We could see both the American as well as the Canadian/Horseshoe falls from our room. The view was very nice during the day and even better at night when the lights came on.

Is this our next race car driver? I parked the van on North Yonge Street in Toronto, in the transit parking lot where the subway ends. I had to see Brian Crow who is the president of Motor Coach Canada, who has an office a few doors away. Nancy, Panjee and Tricia decided to wait in the van. Nancy took this photo of Tricia when she decided to sit in the driver's seat and see what it was like to drive the van.

In a few years I will probably hear "Daddy, can i borrow the keys to the car?"

We ended up in Pefferlaw, Ontario to meet with Doug Andrews of Have Bus Will Travel. This photo was taken in a small butterfly conservatory just south of Lake Simcoe. They did a really nice tour that showed all of the stages of butterflies and moths and explained about them. If you look just above and behind Tricia on the wall you can see a few butterflies. 09.jpg
